Who I am

My name is Akuma, Chijioke. I am an entrepreneur, a husband, a father, and the founder of Hakuna Tech Ltd, trading as HakunaSolar. My journey brings together business, technology, and a desire to build solutions that make everyday life better.

02

Where it started

I studied Business Management at Ebonyi State University and pursued ICT training at NIIT in Ikeja, Lagos. I also undertook training in Healthcare IT Support through Johns Hopkins University. These experiences broadened my interests and helped me connect business knowledge with the practical possibilities of technology.

Over time, entrepreneurship became the path through which I could put that knowledge to work. Nigeria’s electricity challenges presented a problem that affected homes, businesses, and communities. I saw an opportunity to contribute through renewable energy.

03

Founding Hakuna Tech Ltd

On June 24, 2019, I founded Hakuna Tech Ltd. Through HakunaSolar, I set out to help people access dependable power through solar and battery systems. Based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the business has undertaken projects in different parts of Nigeria, serving households, businesses, and institutions.

In 2019, I received support from the Tony Elumelu Foundation through its entrepreneurship programme, including a $5,000 grant. That support became an important part of my entrepreneurial journey and connected me with a wider community of African business owners.

More than selling equipment

Building HakunaSolar has involved much more than selling equipment. It has required attention to system design, installation, maintenance, customer communication, and the people responsible for delivering our work. Every project carries a responsibility: customers trust us to understand their needs and provide a solution they can depend on.

As the company has grown, my responsibilities have expanded from managing individual tasks to developing a team and building better ways of working. I continue to explore how technology, including artificial intelligence and automation, can improve customer service and business operations.

05

Writing, and the things that shape us

My ambitions also extend beyond business. Through my writing and reflections, I explore knowledge, courage, integrity, leadership, and personal responsibility. I am interested in what helps people move from understanding an idea to acting on it.

“The goal is not to prove that you’re smarter than everyone else, but to build something meaningful with what you know.”

This is the kind of contribution I want my work to make. Knowledge becomes valuable through its application—in a problem solved, a business strengthened, or an opportunity created.

06

Family and faith

My wife, Elizabeth, and our family are an important part of my life. Alongside my responsibilities as an entrepreneur, I value my role as a husband and father. My faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses also helps shape my outlook and the principles by which I seek to live.

07

Still being written

My story is still being written. I continue to learn, develop my business, and pursue opportunities to make a useful contribution. Through HakunaSolar and the other work I undertake, my purpose is to keep turning what I know into something meaningful.
